OBJECTIVES: Method-dependent comparison of antimicrobial agents' efficacy against oral pathogens. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Several sodium hypochlorite solutions (NaOCl)-Perisolv®, Carisolv® and Dakin's solution-were equated with chlorhexidine (CHX) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) against ten oral micro-organisms related to caries and periodontitis using different minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and the minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) techniques. Agents were adjusted to the final 70 mmol/L concentration of active chlorine molecule. RESULTS: Apart from H2O2 and the amino acids of Perisolv®, all the agents revealed an antimicrobial effect. Agar diffusion test ranked CHX (p < 0.05) as the most effective against all ten specimens, followed by the NaOCl of Perisolv® and Dakin's solution. Correspondingly, in broth microdilution on agar, CHX was the most effective in eradicating micro-organisms at 0.03 mmol/L compared with 2.2 mmol/L of Dakin's solution. In contrast, the bactericidal concentration of Dakin's solution was the most effective at 0.2 mmol/L, (p < 0.001), followed by Perisolv® (2.14 mmol/L), CHX (2.38 mmol/L) and Carisolv® (3.33 mmol/L) after 5 and 10 min in broth dilution test. In live/dead analysis, 60-min exposure to a 2-fold concentration of agents resulted in two-log Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans inhibition by CHX (35 mmol/L) whilst Streptococcus mutans was more susceptible, in 0.8 and 8.8 mmol/L, after 10 min to CHX and Dakin's respectively. CONCLUSION: Replacement of CHX with tested hypochlorite agents showed evident potential and promoted rapid antimicrobial effect. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Effective antimicrobial agents are crucial in controlling pathogen-induced oral infections increasing clinical possibilities to combat oral biofilms. Additionally, CHX substitution with hypochlorite agents could eliminate CHX's adverse effects.

Aim Assessing the intracoronal bleaching effectiveness of an experimental chlorine dioxide product, based on the walking bleach technique. Methods Extracted bovine incisors were artificially stained with bovine blood and filled with zinc phosphate cement at cementoenamel junction level. Teeth were divided into 3 groups (n=10): (SP) sodium perborate added with distilled water, (CD) chlorine dioxide and (C) control - dry cotton inserted into the pulp chamber. Bleaching agents were used at 0, 7 and 14 days. VITA Easyshadetm (∆Eab) was used to analyze tooth color at the 7th, 14th and 21st days, based on the CIE2000 system. Data were analyzed through ANOVA and Tukey's test. Results There were no statistically significant differences in Δb, ΔE, ΔE00 and ΔWID between CD and the control group. These parameters have shown significant differences between CD and SP, which differed from the control. However, they did not show significant differences either in the control group or in CD at the 7th, 14th and 21st days. Values recorded for SP at the 7th day differed from those recorded at the 14th and 21st days. Δa has shown differences within the same group at the 7th, 14th and 21st days. There was no difference between groups, when they were compared at the same day (7th and 14th). The control group differed from SP at the 21st day. CD did not differ from the other two groups. ΔL did not show differences between groups and times. Conclusion Stabilized chlorine dioxide (0.07%, at pH 3.5) should not be used as intracoronal bleaching agent along with the walking bleach technique.

Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is a key indicator of urban air quality. Secondary organic aerosol (SOA) contributes substantially to the PM2.5 concentration. Discrepancies between modeling and field measurements of SOA indicate missing sources and formation mechanisms. Recent studies report elevated concentrations of reactive chlorine species in inland and urban regions, which increase the oxidative capacity of the atmosphere and serve as sources for SOA and particulate chlorides. Chlorine-initiated oxidation of isoprene, the most abundant nonmethane hydrocarbon, is known to produce SOA under pristine conditions, but the effects of anthropogenic influences in the form of nitrogen oxides (NOx) remain unexplored. Here, we investigate chlorine-isoprene reactions under low- and high-NOx conditions inside an environmental chamber. Organic chlorides including C5H11ClO3, C5H9ClO3, and C5H9ClO4 are observed as major gas- and particle-phase products. Modeling and experimental results show that the secondary OH-isoprene chemistry is significantly enhanced under high-NOx conditions, accounting for up to 40% of all isoprene oxidized and leading to the suppression of organic chloride formation. Chlorine-initiated oxidation of isoprene could serve as a source for multifunctional (chlorinated) organic oxidation products and SOA in both pristine and anthropogenically influenced environments.

This work evaluated the application of organic acids (acetic and peracetic acid) and ultrasound as alternative sanitization methods for improving the microbiological and physicochemical qualities of strawberries. A reduction of up to 2.48 log CFU/g aerobic mesophiles and between 0.89 and 1.45 log CFU/g coliforms at 35 °C was found. For molds and yeasts, significant differences occurred with different treatments and storage time (p < 0.05). Ultrasound treatments in combination with peracetic acid and acetic acid allowed a decimal reduction in molds and yeasts (p < 0.05). All evaluated treatments promoted a significant reduction in the Escherichia coli count (p < 0.05). Scanning electron microscopy revealed fragmented E. coli cells due to treatment with acetic acid and ultrasound. Storage time significantly affected pH, total titratable acidity, total soluble solids and the ratio of the total titratable acidity to the total soluble solids (p < 0.05). Anthocyanin content did not change with treatment or time and generally averaged 13.47 mg anthocyanin/100 g of strawberries on fresh matter. Mass loss was not significantly affected by the applied treatments (p > 0.05). The combination of ultrasound and peracetic acid may be an alternative to chlorine-based compounds to ensure microbiological safety without causing significant changes in the physicochemical characteristics of strawberries.

RESUMEN Objetivos: Realizar una revisión sistemática acerca de la efectividad y seguridad del uso de dióxido de cloro y derivados del cloro, en la prevención o el tratamiento de la COVID-19. Materiales y métodos: Se siguieron las pautas internacionales de elaboración de revisiones sistemáticas de PRISMA y el Manual Cochrane para revisiones sistemáticas de intervenciones. La estrategia de búsqueda la desarrolló un bibliotecario y la revisaron dos de los autores. Se complementó la búsqueda electrónica con una búsqueda manual. Se incluyeron ensayos clínicos aleatorizados, estudios cuasiexperimentales, estudios de cohorte, estudios de casos y controles, estudios de corte transversal y reportes de casos; y se excluyeron estudios in vitro o realizados en animales. Dos revisores, de forma independiente, seleccionaron los estudios según los criterios de elegibilidad definidos, usando el aplicativo web Rayyan, en caso de discordancia se hizo partícipe a un tercer revisor. El protocolo de la revisión sistemática se registró en PROSPERO (CRD42020200641). Resultados: No se identificó ningún estudio publicado ni en proceso de publicación que haya evaluado el uso del dióxido de cloro o derivados del cloro, administrado por vía inhalatoria, oral o parenteral en humanos, como agente preventivo o terapéutico de la COVID-19 o en infecciones por otros coronavirus. Solo se identificó el registro de un único estudio catalogado como observacional que hasta ahora no tiene resultados. Conclusiones: A la fecha, no existe evidencia científica que apoye el uso del dióxido de cloro o derivados del cloro para prevenir o tratar la COVID-19.


ABSTRACT Objectives: To systematically review the effectiveness and safety of chlorine dioxide solution and chlorine derivatives used in the prevention or treatment of COVID-19. Methods: This review adheres to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis (PRISMA) and follows the guidelines provided in the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions. A librarian developed and executed the search strategy; it was further reviewed by two of the authors and complemented by manual search. Randomized clinical trials, quasi-experimental studies, cohort studies, case-control studies, cross-sectional studies, and case reports were included; in vitro or animal studies were excluded. Abstract and full-text screening according to pre-defined eligibility criteria were performed by two reviewers independently using web application Rayyan QCRI. Disagreements on study selection were resolved by a third reviewer. The systematic review protocol was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42020200641). Results: Neither published nor pre-print studies evaluating the use of chlorine dioxide or derivatives on SARS-CoV-2 infection were identified. The only finding was an unpublished observational study registry which has no results released yet. Conclusions: To date, there are no scientific evidence to uphold the use of chlorine dioxide or derivatives as preventive or therapeutic agents against COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: Nasopharyngoscope reprocessing methods should be effective, rapid and reproducible with moderate cost. Tristel Trio Wipes system (TTWS) is a manual reprocessing method based on chlorine dioxide that has lately emerged in ENT department. This review aims to collect evidence on this system. METHODS: The PubMed, Web of Science and Cochrane Library databases were searched for all the studies on TTWS or one of its components. Data were grouped according to the study type. RESULTS: Ten articles were included in the review. TTWS ensured high-level disinfection in laboratory and clinical setting. Although the limitations of the manual systems, TTWS proved to be faster than automated endoscope reprocessing (AER) and safe for patients and health-care workers. TTWS represented cheaper system than AER or sheaths in low- and medium-volume centers. CONCLUSION: TTWS could be a valid, safe and fast HLD method for nasopharyngoscopes, with reasonable costs for medium-low reprocessing volumes.

Introduction: Sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) is extensively used in root canal treatment and its efficacy depends on the concentration of free available chlorine (FAC). This study aimed to assess the chlorine content of 10 domestically manufactured household bleach products available in the Iranian market and evaluate the effect of temperature, time and daily bottle uncapping on FAC concentration and pH of these products. Methods and Materials: One-liter bottles of 10 available brands of household bleach (n=4 of each brand) were collected and randomly divided into four groups (n=10). Two groups were refrigerated at 4°C while the remaining two were stored at room temperature. One group of refrigerated and one group of room temperature samples were subjected to daily bottle uncapping followed by agitation and recapping for 3 months (six times a week to simulate weekly office work). The remaining bottles remained untouched and served as controls. The concentration of FAC in each sample was measured using the iodometric titration assay, and the pH was measured using a calibrated pH-meter at baseline and 1, 2 and 3 months. The results were analyzed using the one-way ANOVA and t-test. Results: The mean concentration of FAC in the solutions was 4.87±0.19% at baseline. The measured concentration of sodium hypochlorite was different from the labeled value. The concentration of FAC decreased over time in all samples; the greatest reduction occurred in room temperature samples subjected to daily uncapping while the smallest reduction occurred in refrigerated, capped bottles (19% and 1.9%, respectively). The pH of all products decreased over time. The mean reduction in pH was 1.1 for the samples stored at room temperature for 3 months and 0.8 for the refrigerated samples. Conclusion: This in vitro study showed that the expected concentration of sodium hypochlorite solution made of household bleach for endodontic purposes is different from its actual concentration.

Retinal is the light-absorbing chromophore that is responsible for the activation of visual pigments and light-driven ion pumps. Evolutionary changes in the intermolecular interactions of the retinal with specific amino acids allow for adaptation of the spectral characteristics, referred to as spectral tuning. However, it has been proposed that a specific species of dragon fish has bypassed the adaptive evolutionary process of spectral tuning and replaced it with a single evolutionary event: photosensitization of rhodopsin by chlorophyll derivatives. Here, by using a combination of experimental measurements and computational modeling to probe retinal-receptor interactions in rhodopsin, we show how the binding of the chlorophyll derivative, chlorin-e6 (Ce6) in the intracellular domain (ICD) of the receptor allosterically excites G-protein coupled receptor class A (GPCR-A) conserved long-range correlated fluctuations that connect distant parts of the receptor. These long-range correlated motions are associated with regulating the dynamics and intermolecular interactions of specific amino acids in the retinal ligand-binding pocket that have been associated with shifts in the absorbance peak maximum (λmax) and hence, spectral sensitivity of the visual system. Moreover, the binding of Ce6 affects the overall global properties of the receptor. Specifically, we find that Ce6-induced dynamics alter the thermal stability of rhodopsin by adjusting hydrogen-bonding interactions near the receptor active-site that consequently also influences the intrinsic conformational equilibrium of the receptor. Due to the conservation of the ICD residues amongst different receptors in this class and the fact that all GPCR-A receptors share a common mechanism of activation, it is possible that the allosteric associations excited in rhodopsin with Ce6 binding are a common feature in all class A GPCRs.

La clordecona es un compuesto organoclorado sintético, empleado como insecticida agrícola y clasificado como contaminante orgánico persistente de aguas y suelos por la Convención de Estocolmo. El uso de carbones activados es una metodología muy popular para la purificación de aguas contaminadas con contaminantes orgánicos persistentes. La clordecona marcada con yodo radiactivo (1-yodoclordecona) puede ser un radiotrazador adecuado para estudios de adsorción, de disponibilidad medioambiental y biodistribución de la clordecona. La selección del carbón activado más adecuado para la adsorción de clordecona requiere evaluar la eficiencia de una gran cantidad de los mismos, de manera empírica, lo que aumenta los costos de investigación. En el presente trabajo, un modelo simplificado de carbón activado con siete anillos aromáticos (coroneno) y un grupo funcional en el borde (carboxilato) se utilizó para evaluar in silico la influencia de este grupo superficial en la adsorción de la clordecona y la 1-yodoclordecona, bajo condiciones neutras de pH. Para ello se empleó la metodología de Hipersuperficie de Múltiples Mínimos con el hamiltoniano semiempírico PM7. Los resultados obtenidos muestran que para el carboxilato en medio neutro existen asociaciones significativas que sugieren quimisorción de la clordecona en el carbón activado. La 1-yodoclordecona se comporta de manera similar a la clordecona en su interacción con el carboxilato, por lo que constituye un buen candidato a radiotrazador para estudios experimentales.


Chlordecone is a synthetic organo chlorinated compound that has been used as pesticide. It has been identified and listed as persistent organic pollutant by the Stockholm Convention. The use of activated carbon filters is one of the most widely popular solutions for water decontamination. The chlordecone labeled with radioactive iodine (1-iodochordecone) is a potential radioactive tracer for studying adsorption, environmental availability and bio-distribution of chlordecone. The selection of the best suited activation carbon for this type of contaminants is mainly an empiric process, increasing the costs of research. A simplified activation carbon model, consisting of a seven ring graphene sheet with a functional group (carboxylate) was used to assess the interaction of chlordecone and 1-iodochlordecone with this surface group under neutral pH conditions over the adsorption process. The Multiple Minima Hypersurface methodology with the semiempirical Hamiltonian PM7 was used. The results indicate that for carboxylate, in neutral conditions, significant associations appear which suggest chemisorption in activated carbon. No significant differences were observed for the interactions of chlordecone and 1-iodochlordecone with carboxylate, making 1-iodochlordecone a good candidate as a radioactive tracer in medical research.

O objetivo do presente estudo foi verificar a influência do pH, embalagem e local de armazenamento na estabilidade química da solução de hipoclorito de sódio em diferentes concentrações. Quinze litros da solução de hipoclorito de sódio foram preparados a partir da diluição de uma solução concentrada para cada uma das seguintes concentrações 0,57 por cento, 1,16 por cento, 2,98 por cento e 6 por cento, perfazendo um total de sessenta litros. Após o preparo, as soluções, foram armazenadas em cinco tipos de embalagens (frasco de vidro âmbar, frasco de vidro transparente, frasco de plástico âmbar, frasco de plástico transparente e frasco de plástico branco opaco) e em três locais diferentes (luminosidade ambiente, ambiente ao abrigo da luz e refrigerador) por um tempo experimental de 180 dias. A análise do pH foi realizada em 1, 7, 15, 30, 60, 90, 120, 150 e 180 dias de armazenamento, por meio de um peagâmetro. O teor de cloro foi verificado pelo método da iodometria em triplicata no início do experimento e após os 180 dias de armazenamento. Verificou-se que todos os valores de pH encontrados foram superiores a 11, sendo, portanto, favoráveis para a estabilidade das soluções de hipoclorito de sódio analisadas. Os fatores que interferiram na estabilidade química das soluções analisadas foram a embalagem e o local de armazenamento. Em relação à embalagem de armazenamento, devem-se usar frascos de vidro ou plástico âmbar e armazená-los em refrigerador.
